Reading The Foliage
Swollen buds, on springtime bough,
Herald a change of season.
New life released from winter store,
Rejoicing heart and reason.
Canopy of Summer green,
Gives cooling, welcome shade,
Blossoms festoon branch and twig,
Down every woodland glade.
Now to the autumn story,
Gold and brown, yellow, red,
Each with a glory of its own,
Beautified by frosted spider’s thread.
Bare branches welcome winter winds,
Shining bright from crystal dew,
With carpet now of warming leaves,
Whose damp decay brings life anew.
From opening bud to Autumn shedding,
As promised seasons come and go,
We read them in the foliage,
From warming Spring to Winter snow.
